1. Intro

Nice to meet you! I’m Dogtopius, the creator of “Tengoku Project”.

This file contains some background information on “Tengoku 3: 天国楓葉呪 〜 Lament of Autumn Maiden”. It’s not necessary to read this first, but if you have any interest in the story, development or any other small details it may be worth a read. As always, the character list contains spoilers for the story, so only read it if you don’t mind being spoiled.

たかや アンジェリカ

Angelica Takaya

The highschool girl genius angel. She’s clearly smarter than the other characters, because she’s the only one who brought a scarf...

赤金 コーネリア

あかがね コーネリア

Cornelia Akagane

Angelica’s long time rival. However, she decides that this time solving the autumn problem is more important than defeating Angelica, so she leaves her alone for now.

白魔 雪

はくま ゆき

Yuki Hakuma

A magician who specialises in ice magic. Winter has always been her favourite season, so she is desperate to find out why autumn won’t end.

栗川 地栃 

くりがわ じとち

Jitochi Kurigawa

A playful girl that doesn't care about restoring winter. As long as she can hunt conkers, it doesn't matter to her what else is happening in the world. When it's not autumn, she plays various games with the conkers she had found all year round.

陰陽 白黒 

いんよう しろくろ

Shirokuro Inyou 

A very persuasive girl that can trick others easily. She can also place curses on people using dark magic, causing them to experience hallucinations or other effects of her choosing.

山颪 風竜  

やまおろし ふうろう

Fuurou Yamaoroshi

A mountain dwelling dragon. She has mastered the power of changing the direction of the wind, which allows her to use even leaves as her weapons as well as misdirecting enemy attacks.

虹月 花火 

にじつき はなび

Hanabi Nijitsuki 

A girl that loves festivals, partying and fortune telling. Her firework shows catch lots of attention, but they are not what they seem... Normally, only danmaku users can notice other danmaku, but somehow she can create danmaku that even humans can notice. 

冬木 楓可 

ふゆき ふうか

Fuuka Fuyuki

A shrine maiden that passed away long ago in autumn. Every year from the start of autumn she regains her human body and can live until the first snowfall of winter, where she returns into her spirit form and can no longer be noticed by anyone. She has gained the name of "Autumn Maiden" as she is often seen patrolling forests in her human form and collecting fallen leaves from the ground. Her sad face has never changed from the day she died. 

風花 白夢 

かざばな しらむ

Kazabana Shiramu

A yuki-onna, and the last of her kind. After the long-awaited winter begins, she causes a blizzard out of her rage, in an attempt to get revenge on whoever was behind the eternal autumn. However, that problem has already been dealt with...

3. Prologue

Every winter, a festival is held to celebrate the first snowfall of the year.

However, the world was still dyed in the orange hues of autumn. It was as though the seasons refused to change...

Angelica walked silently in the street covered in fallen leaves.

“It should be winter by now, and yet... what could be happening?”

“Come to think of it, nothing extraordinary happened this summer. It felt so normal that I had completely forgotten about it... could this mean that someone is waiting to cause trouble in winter instead?”

She headed back home, wondering if Astra would know anything that could help her. Meanwhile, in the forest outside of the Spirit Border, Yuki was complaining to Seraphina about the lack of snow.

“This isn’t fair at all! I waited all year, and there’s only leaves littering the ground...”

As for Cornelia, she wasn’t particularly looking forward to winter. It would be harder for her to generate solar energy, so her weaponry wouldn’t be as effective as usual. However, she thought that if she could be the one to save the day, she would gain Angelica’s respect and become famous.

After preparing themselves, the three heroines set out to the eastern region of Tengoku - a place that none of them had ever been to before.

4. Afterword

- Maple Leaf Curse -

So, we’ve reached the 3rd Tengoku Project. If we don’t count the Tengoku spinoff games made for competitions, this is now my longest running series. I’ve made sequels to my games before, but I’ve never made a third game. This game was originally going to be the very first Tengoku Project game, but I liked the story so much that I decided to save it for later, when my coding skills would have improved and I would have gotten more feedback about the general gameplay.

In terms of the gameplay for this game, I like the “Curse Mode” mechanic. The feeling of a short boost of power is good. I hope it works properly on higher FPS machines now... ^^;

In Tengoku 1 and 2, the special mechanics felt a lot more passive than this, occurring naturally as you were playing. Since you have to chase down the leaves this time, I think it’s a lot more obvious that there’s a special mechanic there to begin with.

- Next Time -

After making so many vertical STG games, I’ve realised it’s time for me to do something different. The next Tengoku Project game will be another spinoff, but I won’t be making it for any sort of competition like the previous ones. I have a bigger game in mind, likely bigger than any game I’ve made so far. If my coding skills hold up, I think I’ll be able to make it...
