Nice to meet you! I’m Dogtopius, the creator of “Tengoku Project”, and after talking about it for a while, I’m finally writing an omake file. Maybe I’ll go back and give some retrospective thoughts on previous works, too...

This file contains some background information on “Tengoku 2.5: 恋愛弾 〜 Capture the Heart”. It’s not necessary to read this first, but if you have any interest in the story, development or any other small details it may be worth a read. The prologue may help to give additional context to the setting of the game (Even I don’t know what happens anymore ^^;) The character list contains spoilers for the story, so only read it if you don’t mind being spoiled.

- The Romantic Angel - 

鷹矢 芷

Angelica Takaya

The centre of the mystery. A high school magical girl who mysteriously received a camera in the mailbox. Even if she’s a little suspicious of it, she thinks that she might as well try it.

- Fallen Angel in Love -

赤金 コーネリア

Cornelia Akagane

Angelica’s long time rival. Even if they battle often, they have a unique type of friendship. No matter how hard she tries to hide it, she’s slowly falling in love with her. She may have bought the camera so that she could see more of the city.

- Romantic Ring -

赤金 オフィーリア

Ophelia Akagane

As a fan of circles, she’s the perfect person to make you a wedding ring. She didn’t like Angelica before, but after hearing that she also likes circles now, her emotions change completely. She may have bought the camera so that Angelica could take pictures of interesting shapes around Tengoku.

- Charming Love Song -

赤金 チェレスタ

Celesta Akagane 

Compared to her other sisters, she has always liked Angelica from the start. She wanted to be friends with her but she was too shy to ask. She tries hard to improve her compositions so that she can impress Angelica with her skills. She may have bought the camera as a distraction for Angelica giving her time to improve her music.

- Burning Passion -

森火 セラフィナ

Seraphina Morika 

A magician skilled in fire magic. Her emotions are as fiery as her magic. She wants to convince Angelica to date her and not her sister, so she may have bought the camera as a simple gift.

- Cooling Touch -

白魔 雪

Yuki Hakuma 

A magician skilled in ice magic. She’s always been impressed by Angelica’s skill in battle and has always looked up to her. She wants to be in a photo together with Angelica, so she may have bought the camera to make that wish come true.

- Admirer from the Shadows -

幻 ミリア

Miria Maboroshi 

A kage-onna living in the Spirit World. Ever since she was defeated by Angelica, she has watched her from a distance. She may have bought the camera as she was tired of seeing the same scenery every day.

- Wish upon the Stars -

聖星 エステラ

Estella Seijou 

Guardian of the Stardust Border. Because of her isolation from everyone else, she began to feel lonely. She had been told about the new angel, and may have bought the camera so that she could see the rest of Tengoku through the pictures Angelica took.

3. Prologue

“Angelica, there’s a parcel for you!”

“Wh-What...?”

I slowly crawled out of my bed and tried to stand. I’ve never been the type to like mornings, so getting up is always difficult. And then there’s other issues, too...

“There’s a parcel for you. It went through the letterbox earlier this morning.”

I let out a sigh. Who would want to send me anything, anyway? If it was from Lisa, she’d probably have waited until we saw each other at school to give it to me in person.

“Can’t you just get it for me?”

“Well, it’s not like I can hold it in my hand...”

...Yeah. My brain’s not entirely there when I first wake up. Well, maybe that’s because of all the strange things I’ve had to put up with. I mean, not everyone has an archangel (That’s what she wants to be called, but she’s really just a ghost) in their apartment...

I sauntered downstairs and towards the door. The package was only a small cardboard box, yet when I picked it up it was heavier than I expected. It seemed like there might be multiple items inside, too. As soon as I opened it, a card slipped out and fell face down on the floor. It was the Queen of Hearts. What is this, some sort of fortune telling game? I picked up the card and sat down at the kitchen table, where Astra was “sitting”.

“So, what did you get?”

“I haven’t really looked yet. This card fell out though...”

“How curious...”

I rattled the box a bit and then cut it open. It was... a camera?

Why would anyone get me that?

“You can leave the camera with me if you like. You’d better get ready for school now.”

For once, I didn’t really feel like going; I just wanted to inspect this camera more. Maybe someone at school would know about it? I guess I could ask Lisa...

On the way to school, I thought I saw the silhouette of a girl. When I turned to face her, I heard the snap of a camera. She had disappeared into the wind, leaving only one thing behind.

That girl also held the Queen of Hearts.

4. Afterword

Well, somehow it’s the 2.5th Tengoku Project! This game marks the series’ 1st anniversary, so I made the decision to not include any new characters and reflect on previous works. 

It’s quite different from the other Tengoku games. For starters, the type of shooting you do is with a camera, not with bullets. Well, it’s a less painful way to get the job done...

Anyway, there’s more of a focus on the individual patterns, it seems. Still, that doesn’t really mean they are any better than in other games, there’s just more of them ^^;

That aside, there’s the dating aspect to this game. This game was made for the “Magical Girl Game Jam 5” which required the combining of two genres together. I don’t know if this is the best way to combine the two genres (Shmup and Ren’ai), but I decided to choose this idea anyway. Well, they are combined a bit; you can’t date someone until you take enough photos of them, after all. 

- Angel Who Is Actually a Cupid? -

I wonder what it’s like to play this game without playing any of the others. Well, I especially wonder what kind of dating choices the player would make if they had no prior knowledge of the characters… (I’d probably still pick Cornelia, though.) I used to take pictures a lot, so you’d probably think I was really into photography or something. This type of gameplay is hardly original, though. It’s just something I wanted to try coding.

- Wonders of Fantastic Camera -

On the topic of coding... Well, getting the photos to show up was difficult at first, but that wasn’t the only problem. Since this is a browser game, everything behaved differently on different browsers. The photos broke a few times, but hopefully it should work more than 75% of the time now ^^; As usual, higher frame rates probably cause a few issues too, so it might be best to play at 60fps. Oh, and if you take a photo that is blank, or it seems to be very blurry: it’s Angelica’s first time using a camera, so be kind, please.

- Next Time -

As usual, it’s back to normal vertical shooting in Tengoku 3. Don’t worry though, there’ll be a special twist in the gameplay to enjoy, so please look forward to the demo version (It’ll be my first time releasing a demo, so hopefully it doesn’t kill my views for the full game (-人-) )
